A grass bald on the Appalachian Trail with Jane Bald and Grassy Ridge stepping away to the east and nothing blocking the horizon. The grass goes bronze and the blueberry and flame azalea in the swales turn red against the black-green spruce along the ridge.

The Rockefeller Memorial terrace looks southeast down the Oconaluftee drainage, where you stand in already-turned birch and beech while the valley 3,000 feet below is still green. Sunrise fills the drainage with stacked fog layers.

A concrete observation tower on a low outlier ridge with the full Smokies crest lined up to the east and the Tennessee Valley opening west. At 2,650 feet it holds color after the high country is bare, and the elevation gap makes the crest read as a separate band.

A one-way single-lane loop through old-growth hemlock and poplar with rhododendron tunnels, stream crossings and the Ephraim Bales and Alfred Reagan cabins. Flat overcast light works better than sun here because the canopy closes overhead and the creek stays in shadow.

An 11-mile one-way loop around a valley floor at about 1,700 feet, with log cabins, the John Oliver place and split-rail fence lines running against the ridge wall. Because the cove sits so low it peaks late, often two weeks behind Newfound Gap directly uphill.
